This post has been updated!!! This has been one of my most popular and highly pinned blog posts about going digital with Project Life®. I have updated the content and shared more helpful information below. Enjoy!
I went completely digital with Project Life® back in 2014 and I love it!
WHY digital you ask? Well, for me it comes down to a few good reasons...
Digital is Faster + Easier
Life is busy. I want to document my family's story but it is so hard to find the time to do it. By going digital, I can drop photos into my digital templates, add some words and then I'm done! When I used a physical album I had to order my photos for printing, drive to Costco to pick them up, sort through the photos, cut some of them to fit in the 3x4 pockets, print and cut my journaling cards AND THEN assemble the pages. It turned into quite a long process. I either had to drag out all of my supplies or keep them scattered all over the dining room table. No thanks. Going digital is a more efficient process. I can sit down at my computer when I have a few minutes and easily pick up where I left off creating pages. I also love the instant gratification of seeing my completed pages on the computer screen right away.
The cost of supplies for creating a physical album can add up - the two binders for each year, the sheet protectors in various designs, the paper and printer ink for my journaling cards, the pre-designed card kits, the photo printing and other scrapbooking supplies (paper trimmer, blade refills, pens, stamps, ink, etc.) Digital is much more cost effective. Once I buy my digital page templates, I can use them over and over again. Same goes for any digital card designs. After the initial purchase, the only thing I have to spend money on is printing the photo book at the end of the year. I haven't done a cost breakdown, but for me the one time cost of printing a completed book is the winner. Especially if you find a coupon!
Space + Book Size
I made physical albums for Project Life® for two years and each year I needed two 12x12 albums to fit it all in! These albums take up lots of space. I have no place to keep two big albums for each year - on top of all of the other photo projects that I have done and the ones that I want to complete in the future. With digital files, I can get a printed photo book that will take up just a little bit of space on my shelf. It will also allow me to add lots of extra pages without worrying if they will all fit in my album. I can add extra pages for birthdays, vacations and special holidays to my hearts content.
I love the clean + simple look of a hard cover photo book. I love how it looks like a real book that you would buy in a bookstore. And I love the idea of documenting my family in our very own book format - sleek, slim and all lined up on a shelf. I keep all of the covers of any photo book projects that I print white with black text on the spine. The actual cover design may vary from scanned drawings that the boys create to a few simple words or photos, but the background is always white to keep the look uniform. The book sizes of my other projects might vary, but they are all have a simple white spine with black text. This looks so pretty all lined up on my shelf. (You can see a tiny peek of the white books in the top left corner of the photo above.)
With digital memory keeping, I don't get to hold my completed pages in my hands when I am done with a page. But what I can do is view my digital pages in an album on my iPad (or iPhone, tablet, smart phone, computer, etc.) right away. This allows me to "flip" through the pages of our Project Life® photo book as the year progresses. I can take it with me anywhere I go. I use Apple devices, so I just air drop the files to myself and save them into a Project Life® yearly album on my iPad or iPhone. It's like having a digital book in progress with me all the time! Of course I will print a hard copy of our finished book at the end of the year, but until then this keeps me happy.
With a physical album, I had to use the previous pocket pages design layout for the left page. Sometimes this wasn't the design that I wanted, but I was stuck. With digital page designs I can use any design template I want on any page. The creative possibilities are endless!
I can view my pages on my computer and rearrange the order at anytime. If I want to add some vacation pages or move pages around, it is so easy. Can't do that without getting a headache using physical albums.
Digital provides the security of backing up our family story and pages in progress. I can back up our whole entire Project Life® album in more than one place. I can have my digital pages saved on my computer, on an external hard drive via Time Machine, in the cloud and even burned onto DVDs. Please tell me you have your photos and Project Life® pages backed up! If not, you MUST read this.
I can print extra copies of our photo book at any time. If my boys would like a copy of our Project Life® books one day, I can print extra copies for them. And if something should ever happen to these photo books (eek!!!), I could always get a new one printed. If there ever was a fire (yes, this happened to a friend!), after my family I'd have to grab my 2012 and 2013 Project Life® albums because they are not digital books.
I fell in love with the digital process. I got a taste of going digital with Project Life® when I did December Daily® in 2013 and I completely fell in love with the whole process. Quick, easy and instant pages. Digital has my heart. I've never looked back. Not for a minute.

Digital Page Templates
The Simply White Life Pages
I created the Simply White Life Pages 12×12 templates to for my digital memory keeping. These page designs have a good amount of white space around the edge of the page and also have squared corners on the photos inside of each template. I have many different page layout designs and page sizes including 12x12, 8.5x11, 8x10 and 6x8. I’m always adding more page layouts as I create them for my own design needs!
Don't see the size or design layout that you want? Let me know because I'm always creating new templates...
